A laboratory space: Joseph Beuys and National Socialism

From 30 March 2025

The research project Joseph Beuys and National Socialism – A Laboratory Space, which has been running since April 2023, critically reexamines the history of the artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), with a particular focus on his involvement with National Socialism and his later stance on the period. The Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation, home to the largest collection of Beuys’s works and a  comprehensive archive by and about Joseph Beuys, provides the material basis for this inquiry. The project aims to offer a nuanced and critical examination of Beuys’s relationship to National Socialism. Beginning on 30th March 2025, the findings will be showcased in an interactive laboratory space (exhibition space) integrated into the permanent Beuys exhibition on the first floor of the castle. This exhibition will present insights into Joseph Beuys’s youth, his military service, and his participation in the 1957 competition for a memorial at the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp.
